Sharing Lessons and Experiences in Promoting Social Accountability in the Extractive Industry
ANSA-EAP’s CSO partners from Cambodia, Indonesia, Timor Leste, Mongolia and the Philippines gathered in a conference last July 17 and 18, 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand where they shared lessons and presented case studies on the use of community scorecards as a tool for promoting social accountability.
The diligence of the CSO partners in implementing the various processes and activities of CSC enabled the stakeholders – communities affected by the extractive operations, local governments, and EI companies- to engage each other in identifying urgent issues and concerns, and collaboratively identified actionable measures to address the issues. Partners in Cambodia highlighted the value of CSC as: ‘ where existing researches and studies surfaced and listed communities’ fears, opposition, or acceptance of mining operations, using CSC enabled the community members to relate and express their concerns directly to their local government officials.
