The Cambodian Center for Independent Media (CCIM) is a non-partisan, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Established in June 2007, it is an offshoot of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR). CCIM was organized to continue the production of Voice of Democracy (VOD) radio programs started by CCHR in January 2003, when there was very limited discussion of human rights on radio. VOD radio programs aim to educate people about issues on human rights and politics, among others. CCIM continues to use media as a tool to educate Cambodians on their rights and on the greater issue of governance. Donors such as the Open Society Institute (OSI-Zug), European Union (EU), British Embassy Phnom Penh, Friedrich Naumann Stiftung (FNSt) and Asia Calling support its various projects.
The vision of the organization is for Cambodian media to freely, independently and responsibly inform, educate and empower the people. To achieve this, CCIM implemented a training program entitled “Reporting of Social Accountability Issues: Empowering the Journalists and Citizens to Report Social Accountability Issues through the Broadcast Radio” with support from the Affiliated Network on Social Accountability (ANSA). The objective of the project was to empower the Cambodian journalists and citizens, particularly in the rural areas, to report on pressing issues. It also aimed to raise the public’s awareness of its role in monitoring and reporting the accountabilities of government officials, including private corporations and NGOs. The radio program was broadcast weekly in 2009.
It held similar training on “The Role of Media in Promoting Social Accountability.” Around 20 Cambodian print and broadcast journalists, mostly coming from the nearby provinces of Kandal and Kampong Speu, joined the one-day training funded by ANSA-EAP. Cristina Dumlao of the Philippines presided over the sessions.
