Governance, ICT, and Youth
The Affiliated Network for Social Accountability in East Asia and the Pacific (ANSA-EAP) announces back-to-back events on Good Governance, ICT, and Youth from 3 to 5 August 2010 in Manila, the Philippines.
August 3 – Launching of Plutopia. “Plutopia” is an interactive game that uses social networking to enhance citizenship education. The launch includes an art contest with the theme Plutopia: Youth for Social Accountability. (See below for more on Plutopia)
August 4-5 – Forum on Youth and ICT Social Awareness, Accountability, and Change. The forum will discuss the use of ICT to promote the concept of “social accountability” among the youth. Topics include the Plutopia Online Game, checkmyschool.org, and E-Participation. These are all ICT projects supported by ANSA-EAP to promote citizenship education and good governance
Plutopia–An Online World about Good Citizenship and
Good Government
“Plutopia “ is a free interactive citizenship game where you are a citizen watching whether your government does its job honestly, efficiently, openly, and with genuine concern for the people.
You are given several ways to stop or discourage public officials from abusing their power and wrongly using the people’s money.
For the young, Plutopia offers ample activity and variety to be an absorbing online game in itself, while subtly teaching values of good citizenship and responsible government.
For professionals, especially those who work in development and government, Plutopia can be enjoyed both as online game and role-playing tool, especially if played as part of a training program.
For all age groups, Plutopia provides challenge and fellowship.
The game is based on the idea that citizens have the right and the power to hold government to account for its actions. It gives a virtual experience of “social accountability” action in a world called “Plutopia” by, among others, introducing players to the Four Pillars of Social Accountability:
- organized and capable citizen groups;
- an enabling environment, with government champions who are willing to engage;
- cultural appropriateness; and,
- access to information.
You can play Plutopia by going to http://apps.facebook.com/plutopia
