A Yolanda-battered public school in an island barangay in Guimaras has been scheduled for repair by the local government after intervention by Checkmyschool.
CMS Guimaras visited Unisan Multigrade School, a four-classroom school in Bgy. Guiwanon, Nueva Valencia town in Guimaras, in February 2015 for data updating. This is a key process of the CMS program that captures the real condition of schools through citizen monitoring and feedback.
The citizens informed the CMS team that the school had been badly damaged with one of its roofs having been blown off.
Members of the CMS Guimaras Chapters, headed by Chapter Coordinators Ana Eva Villanueva and Charrie Villanueva-Masculino, and CMS Nueva Valencia Chapter member Gilda Hermogino then elevated these issues to the local government of Nueva Valencia.
The same process was conducted data in two other schools in the town, Nueva Valencia National High School and Concordia Elementary School. Less than a month after the updating, the local government committed to provide repairs in terms of a school fence and water system funding for the former, fencing for the latter, and overall repairs for Unisan Multigrade SChool.
CMS Secretariat member Paul Villaneva led the team in announcing the news to Unisan on March 19.
The CMS Guimaras Chapters—CMS Nueva Valencia, San Lorenzo, Sibunag, Buenavista, and Jordan—are conducting a province-wide implementation of the program, with volunteers having visited almost a hundred schools.
The Guimaras team, along with the 13 other active CMS Chapters—Labangan, and Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur; Dipolog City; Kalilangan, Bukidnon; Midsayap, Kabacan, Aleosan and Carmen, North Cotabato; Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental; Guimbal, Iloilo; Bacolod City, Makati, and Quezon City—are currently undergoing data updating, collaborative problem-solving sessions with local government units and local Department of Education offices as the fourth year of the program nears its close.
Next steps for all chapters include data encoding (uploading the data gathered to www.checkmyschool.org), and monitoring of reported school issues.
