METRO MANILA — On 14 January 2011, ANSA-EAP will sign a memorandum of agreement with the Philippine Government’s Department of Education (DepEd) for the pilot operation of checkmyschool.org.

The first of its kind in the Philippines, checkmyschool is a Google Maps mashup of public school data from the DepEd and GPS coordinates of school buildings.

It gives the Filipino general public direct access to updated, vital information about the facilities, conditions, and relative performance of about 8,000 government elementary and high schools throughout the country.

With its slogan of “Promoting transparency and social accountability, one school at a time!”, checkmyschool also offers something unique: it provides citizens with Internet and mobile phone tools so that they can, themselves, pass on information about government schools in their localities.

The memorandum signing will start at 4 p.m. at the Social Development Complex of the Ateneo de Manila University.

To sign for the DepEd is the Hon. Francisco M. Varela, Undersecretary for Finance and Administration. Signing for the Ateneo is Dr. Edna P. Franco, Vice President for Administration and Planning, Ateneo de Manila University. Signing for ANSA-EAP and delivering the opening remarks is Dr. Angelita Gregorio-Medel, ANSA-EAP Director.

checkmyschool is a joint project of the DepEd, ANSA-EAP, and the Ateneo.  It receives funding support from the World Bank Institute. The Ateneo School of Government, which currently hosts ANSA-EAP, belongs to the Ateneo system.
